John Hegstrom founded Actmod Solutions, an independent consulting practice serving life and annuity insurers. He has worked in the industry since 1985, building, running, and validating models for valuation, financial reporting, pricing, and planning.
His platform work centers on Prophet, including the US360 and ALS libraries, as well as GGY Axis. He has built and validated models based on US statutory (VM-20, VM-21, VM-22), US GAAP (LDTI), and Bermuda reporting bases, including PBR and nested stochastic work, across fixed indexed, variable, and registered index-linked annuities as well as universal, indexed universal, and traditional life.
Before founding the current practice, John spent nearly 14 years as a Senior Consulting Actuary at Actuarial Resources Corporation, designing and building Prophet models and consulting on model conversion, governance, pricing, and valuation. Earlier, as Senior Actuary at USAA, he led life and annuity pricing and product development, as well as principle-based reserve and capital modeling, total company and asset-liability modeling, and statutory and GAAP reporting. He first ran Actmod Solutions in 2011, where he developed and sold a novel model compression approach.
John works directly on every engagement. He brings AI tools into the modeling workflow for code documentation, specification-to-model translation, parallel model builds, and regression testing, with the same review and governance standards the underlying models require.
He speaks at industry events on open-source actuarial modeling and the practical use of AI in actuarial work.
